Information Regarding Apostilles:
What is an Apostille?
Apostille is also a French word meaning to certifiy, and is most often used to refer to the legalization
of a document for international use under the terms of the 1961 Hague Convention abolishing the requirement of legalization for Foreign Public Documents.
Why do I need an Apostille?
The member countries have agreed based on the 1961 Hague Convention, that a document which has been legalized with an Apostille
Certificate in the country of origin shall be accepted in any other member countries, under this treaty. Subsequently, this removes any need for further evidence to be obtained
to show the documents authenticity.
Normally, an Apostille is required for any legal transactions where a document from one country must is to be presented in another, as part of a legal process. Often this involves
business transactions but is also becoming more common for property dealings and also to settle the estate of a deceased person with assets overseas. Some of the most common documents requiring
legalization with an Apostille Certificate are Powers of Attorney, Passports, Birth, Marriage and Death Certificates. The requirement of an Apostille is a benefit to you in that in the process of
obtaining the Apostille, you are verified as the signor of the document by a Notary Public thus detering fraud or you being
defrauded.
